"Could you create one of these… for me?"

For as long as I can remember, I've loved beautiful hospitality — the quiet luxury of a place thought through to its smallest detail. Thirteen years of running hotels and stays led me to THE KAKU, in Nara, where guests arrive from all over the world.

And again and again — many of them from abroad — they'd ask that same question. It makes sense. People who fall for Japan want a home here, but not the burden of it. They want it made with real craft, cared for, and quietly run as a boutique inn while they're away.

So that is increasingly my work: to design a singular Japanese property for an owner overseas, and run it to hotel standard when they're not in it.

I don't buy furniture off a shelf for these places. Where it matters, I make — or I find the one piece that was always meant to be there. The dining table in one house is a single slab of wood: three metres, one piece, with a grain and a history you couldn't design if you tried.

A home worth having should hold things that exist nowhere else.
